Japan Foundation London Language Centre annual grant programmes
Administering the annual grant programmes is a major part of the Japan Foundation's work. More than 70 programmes are run annually to help promote the Japanese language, Japanese Studies and artistic exchange worldwide.
Application forms for 2009-10 should be available from late autumn 2008, and the deadline is likely to be in early December.
The Japan Foundation London Language Centre is responsible for administering all Japanese language-related programmes for the UK. Please click here for a programme summary guidelines sheet, or go to our Tokyo site for full details of these and all our annual programmes.

Designed to provide teachers of Japanese with an opportunity to improve their language skills and teaching methodology whilst deepening their knowledge of Japan. There are five types of programmes of varying duration:
- 6 months for non-native speaking teachers only (once a year)
- 2 months for non native-speaking teachers only (three times a year)
- 4 weeks for non native-speaking teachers (every two years)
- Advanced training programme for teachers of the Japanese language. Available for native and non-native speakers. Participants must have ability equivalent to JLPT level 1.
- Great opportunity to refresh your Japanese language skills
- Perfect for resource collection and gathering of artefacts to use in the classroom
Helen described the course as a ‘wonderful way to refresh my Japanese and increase my confidence in using ICT in the classroom, as well as a great opportunity to collect and create new resources. We were able to visit schools and film students, and then learnt how to edit videos and use them in Power Point presentations. I particularly enjoyed the ‘outreach’ elements of the programme which involved interviewing members of the community, and spending time with Japanese high school students who showed us their favourite places in town, giving us a feel for Japanese youth culture which was a great experience after 14 years away from Japan’.
For those who need to improve their Japanese for academic purposes
Part-funding to help establish new teaching posts.
The Japan Foundation offers outstanding students of Japanese language at high schools abroad the opportunity to join other high school students of Japanese from around the world, and spend two weeks at the Japan Foundation Japanese Language Institute in Kansai, Japan. The programme aims to deepen applicants' understanding of the Japanese language, culture and society, for the purpose of further encouragement of their study of the Japanese language.
Applications have now closed for the 2008 programme.
The Japan Foundation offers UK Japanese language teachers (in schools, further education and higher education) the opportunity to take part in a study course in Alsace, France.
Applications have closed for the 2008 course. Please click here to read a report on the 2007 course.

The Sasakawa Foundation supports projects in areas such as cultural, linguistic, educational and youth exchange. Individuals cannot usually apply for a grant on their own behalf.
The Japan Foundation London Office runs annual grant programmes to support academic, artistic, media and cultural projects promoting exchange between the UK and Japan.
