Training Programme for Japanese Language Education in Europe in Alsace

The Japan Foundation in Paris (MCJP) and the Site du Centre europeen d'Etudes japonaises d'Alsace (CEEJA or 欧州日本学研究所) invites applications for the 2017 Training Programme for Teachers of Japanese, which will take place in Paris (in France) in July 2017. The training course is designed to promote Japanese language education in Europe.

There are three themes for this year’s course:
「異文化間リテラシー教育」x「アクティブ・ラーニング」x「学びの全身化」
Multicultural Education literacy, Active learning, and Learning through the Whole Body

Attendees: 15 places available those who meet the below requirements from any of the following countries:

Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Former Yugoslav Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Vatican.

Applications from native speakers are welcome.

The 2017 Training Programme has now finished.

Requirements for attendees:

* As all lectures will be held in Japanese, participants who are not native speakers of Japanese must be N2 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), or B1 level of the JF Standard or above.

You need to be one of the following:

  1. A student enrolled in a Higher Education institution in Europe (We will prioritise students who specialise in Japanese language education.)
  2. Teachers of Japanese working in European institutions (We will prioritise teachers who are involved in planning and facilitating Japanese classes.)

After the course, you must share the results of your training at teachers events here in the UK

Costs: The organisers will cover the costs of the training, accommodation, breakfast and lunch

Attendees will need to pay for their own evening meals, accommodation and for their transport costs**.

** As a general rule, you will need to cover the first 200 Euros of your travel expenses, then the organisers will supplement costs above this.

Courses for Specialists in Cultural and Academic Fields

Programme for Specialists in Cultural and Academic Fields - Kansai, Japan

This programme provides 2-month and 6-month residential language courses for specialists (researchers, postgraduate students, librarians, museum and art gallery curators, etc.) who need to improve their Japanese for academic or professional purposes. Courses take place at our Japanese-Language Institute in Kansai, Japan. Tuition, accommodation and meals are included in the programme but applicants bear their own return travel expenses to Japan. The programme is open to those who are in a field of Japan-related humanities and social sciences, who are aged under 40, and who have a proficiency in Japanese of level JLPT N4 (level 3 of the old JLPT) or equivalent.

Dates for FY 2019-20 programme:

Applications Available: September 2018

Application Deadline: 3 December 2018 (TBC)

Course dates:

  • 2 month course: June 2019 to August 2019
  • 6 month course: October 2019 to April 2020

Number of grants / applicants in 2018 (worldwide): 29 / 87 (two month course = 13 participants, six month course = 16 participants)

Courses for Teachers of Japanese in Japan

The Japan Foundation Japanese Language Institute in Urawa organises several training programmes for teachers of Japanese. Training Programs for Foreign Teachers of the Japanese-Language - Urawa, Japan

Basic Training Program for Teachers of the Japanese-Language:
This 6-month course allows non-native speaking Japanese teachers to improve their Japanese language skills and methodology through an intensive programme of lectures on language and culture. Open to those under 35 who have between 6 months' and 5 years' Japanese teaching experience, and JLPT N4 (level 3 of the old JLPT) or equivalent. Applicants must bear their own return travel expenses to Japan.

Dates for FY 2019-20 programme:

  • Applications Available: September 2018
  • Application Deadline: December 3 2018
  • Results Notification: Late April 2019

Course dates:

  • September 3, 2019 – February 28, 2020

Japanese Language Programme for Teachers of the Japanese-Language

his programme is a six week programme designed to provide an opportunity for teachers to improve their Japanese language skill and deepen their knowledge of Japanese society and culture.

Dates for FY 2019-20 programme:

  • Applications Available: September 2018
  • Application Deadline: December 3 2018
  • Results Notification: March 2019

Course dates:

  • May 14, 2019 – June 27, 2019

Japanese Teaching Methods Programme for Teachers of the Japanese Language

This programme is a six week programme designed to provide an opportunity to improve teaching methodology. This programme will be conducted twice (Summer Course and Winter Course) per year.

  • Results Notification: April 2019

Training Programme for Teachers of Japanese on a Specific Theme
This programme will deepen your knowledge on theories and methodologies related to the theme. Open to both native and non-native teachers of Japanese who are under 55, have over three years' Japanese teaching experience, and JLPT N2 (level 2 of the old JLPT) or equivalent.

Dates for FY 2019-20 programme:

Course dates:

  • A. “21st century skills”: June 25, 2019 – July 18, 2019 (tentative)
