Japan Foundation Japanese Studies Survey 2020

Japanese Studies Survey 2020 Logo

In 2020, the Japan Foundation, London carried out a Survey of Japanese Studies at university level in the UK. This was an update of the previous survey undertaken in 2015.

The Japan Foundation is Japan’s principal organisation for promoting international cultural exchange worldwide and through our funding programmes we offer support to organisations and individuals working in the field of Japanese Studies. Through the survey we hoped to gain an overview of the state of Japanese Studies in the UK so we can continue to plan our programmes in this field to support it as effectively as possible.

The 2020 survey is composed of a survey of UK universities where Japanese Studies or Japan-related research and teaching takes place. There is also a separate survey for both students and academics which aim to capture individual views.

Through creating the following survey report, we hope to provide a useful reference resource for those wishing to learn about Japan-related research and teaching at universities throughout the UK. It is hoped that the survey will bring attention to the field of Japanese Studies and its continuing value in the UK, and showcase the diversity of research and teaching taking place across the country.
