As
part of our activities, the Japan Foundation creates exhibitions based on its
own collection of artworks, and presents them on extended worldwide tours. These
touring exhibitions cover a wide range of art forms including graphic art, photography, contemporary painting, ceramics,
dolls and toys from different regions, and new themes are developed as the need
arises.
Scheduled by our Head Office in Tokyo, the availability of each exhibition is
normally limited to two to three months for UK venues and the choice could be
limited. However, the London Office makes sure that the touring exhibition available
in this country meets our policy of representing our culture in under-represented
areas as well as meeting the UKs market demand.
In the recent past, we have toured a number of exhibitions on contemporary Japanese
arts and culture, including Out of the Oridnary/Extraordinary. (Previous
Touring Exhibitions)
For enquires regarding the Japan Foundation touring exhibitions, contact Junko
Takekawa, Senior Arts Programme Officer.

New
touring exhibition available in the UK from March to May 2010:
Winter
Garden
The Exploration of the Micropop
Imagination in Contemporary Japanese Art |
This
newly created Japan Foundation touring
exhibition comprises works by 14 Japanese
artists, born between the late 1960s
and early 1980s, whose style of work
can be defined as Micropop. The artistic
expressions of these artists have the
distinct appearance of modesty and anonymity, using inexpensive or
expendable materials, and frequently adopting apparently "easy-to-attain" methods
of drawing and video as their main means of expression.
Their expressions nevertheless transform apparently
insignificant objects around us into
refreshing and stimulating experiences,
through the combination of apparently
heterogeneous things, and the invention
of a new use or context in which defunct
things attain new lives. From paintings to simple drawings and moving
images, the exhibition, categorised by three sections, ultimately attempts
to present modest but flexible art forms that capture the fundamental
activities of the human mind and body and liberate imagination from
historically or culturally imposed limits., asserting them as responses
from young Japanese artists to the discouraging conditions of their
age, while conveying the hope of spiritual survival and effective reorganisation
of the living environment.

| out
of the ordinary / extraordinary: japanese contemporary photography |
Pregnant
men posing in a fertility clinic; strangers photographed from outside the windows
of their homes; a young woman dressing up in various fashion trends of Japanese
teenagers, exploring the superficial concept of "youth". Through their
photographic works 11 Japanese artists, mostly from the younger generation, try
to give a new form of expression to the complexities of our ever-changing world
and the instability of Japanese society behind the façade of economic prosperity.
They
question the very things in their own world and society that they have long accepted
as 'obvious' and attempt to validate and reconstruct them by a process that reassesses
the 'relationship' between the artist and these diverse elements. With
such diverse values and viewpoints, the artistic expression of these artists might
appear too subtle to notice, but their work undoubtedly contains some 'premonition
of the future'.
