Courses and events for teachers

JFLLC supports the teaching of Japanese throughout the UK aiming to provide teachers in all sectors with the information and training they need to keep on top of their subject. Teachers travel from all over the UK to attend these courses and as such they are also a great way of networking and exchanging ideas with colleagues in the field. Recent courses for teachers have included:

  • WJEC Level 1 Certificate in Japanese - Training Day for Teachers

This day gives teachers of the WJEC Level 1 Certificate in Japanese the chance to hear presentations from the Chief Examiner, and also from other teachers of this course. The day includes practical ideas for your lessons and a question and answer session.

  • Continuing Professional Development for Japanese Language Teachers

    Wednesday 28th to Friday 30th May, 2008.

This three-day course is designed to provide CPD for teachers of Japanese language. It will give a thorough grounding in choosing suitable resources and using them effectively, cross-curricular activities (including combining Japanese language learning with Museum Studies through Japanese art), and sharing resources and activities with other teachers. The course will include a visit to the British Museum.

CPD for Japanese Language Teachers is designed for primary and secondary school teachers. Although others are welcome to apply, we will be giving priority to primary and secondary school teachers.

This is a three-day course, and applicants can choose to come on just one day, two days, or all three days. However, priority will be given to those who can attend all three days.

The course is open to native and non-native speakers of Japanese. It will be held in easy Japanese, and non-native speakers will need at least level 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (or equivalent) to take part. (if you do not have this level in Japanese, look out for more information on this summer's Japanese Language Refresher Course, for JLPT Level 3 and under).

Deadline for applications is Friday 16th May

  • 力-CHIKARA Workshop

These sessions are designed for teachers currently teaching or planning to teach GCSE Japanese using CHIKARA, a unique resource produced for UK teachers and students of Japanese.

The Japan Foundation London Language Centre (JFLLC) launched a comprehensive set of teaching resources to support the GCSE curriculum, the first resource of its kind designed for the UK Japanese classroom. The resources help students to learn the structure of Japanese language and to practise the language learnt in a communicative setting by using audio files, model texts, grammar and interactive exercises. Teacher’s Reference Materials, which include lists of GCSE Japanese structures and vocabulary, provide extra support and guidance for teachers of GCSE Japanese and teachers who are interested in CHIKARA resources.

    • Are you looking for something new to inspire students and enhance their learning in the GCSE Japanese classroom?
    • Would you like some pointers as to how you can use CHIKARA most effectively to improve your teaching of the GCSE syllabus?

Each workshop will run from 1.30 – 4.30 pm at the Japan Foundation. More information to follow.

  • StepOutNet Training Day
The JFLLC runs occasional training sessions designed for private tutors, teachers, volunteers and enthusiasts interested in delivering Japanese taster lessons at UK primary and secondary schools. Over 50 volunteers have signed up as StepOutNet members, a number of school visits have taken place, and more lessons are due to be delivered by volunteers in the near future. The training sessions are designed to give volunteers ideas for preparing a taster session, and the opportunity to meet each other and discuss previous visits.

Lead by experienced Japanese Language Advisors, the day includes a Japanese taster experience, sessions on exams and resources, as well as networking opportunities with colleagues who have introduced Japanese successfully. Participants also have access to the specialist library and information facilities.

    Previous participants have found the course extremely worthwhile;

‘This has been a fantastic opportunity, made all the more amazing by the staff and participants. Everyone has been so supportive and hardworking and I am so glad I was able to take part. Many thanks to everyone involved’ (Primary school teacher, Bath)

The quality of the teachers was excellent- very patient and attentive. The whole experience very enjoyable, challenging and I feel every person I have made contact with this week in the Japan Foundation has given us so much. Thank you for the opportunity and all your support. Meeting other interested participants and sharing was wonderful. (Secondary school teacher, Wales)
