Jim Breen's WWWJDIC Server Easy-to-use site which is very useful for looking up Kanji. The site allows you to insert Japanese text which it will then translate word for word. It does not attempt to translate Japanese text into English; it simply sets out to identify the words in the text and to display the translations of those words. The user is expected to know enough Japanese grammar to make sense of the results.

Nihongo Kyouiku Network This site, run by The National Institute for Japanese Language is entirely in Japanese and you will need to register to use it. It contains an animated version of the manga Kobochan, which appears in the Yomiuri Shimbun, complete with sound, grammar explanations and English translations. Other resources on the site include the Kodansha Nihongo Folktale Series, photos, a comprehensive section on gion and gitaigo and a series of films made specifically for foreign students on numerous topics.

1 Click on [touroku moushikomi] at the bottom of the home page which will bring up [shinki touroku chuuijikou] or some important points about registration.
2 Next click on and register your details. Be sure to register as an individual not on behalf of your school. It will accept romaji.
